How to make the perfect matcha latte
Matcha is all about the ratios and the method. You may experience too weak or watery matcha lattes if you don’t have the proper ratio of matcha to water to milk. Also, you might get clumps in your matcha latte if you fail to whisk appropriately.
The ratio of matcha to water to milk is:
People mix 1 tbsp of quality matcha with 3/4 cups of hot water to make the perfect matcha latte. Almond milk is added afterwards.

First, a matcha whisk will ensure smooth matcha without clumps. Make the matcha by whisking it in “W” shapes as quickly and gently as possible. The W-motion helps break up clumps for a smooth consistency and creates a nice foamy top. Many people do it in round motions, but the W-motion helps.
It is also recommended to whisk your matcha in a bowl with a flat bottom. You may already have a bowl like this in your cupboard, or you can buy a “matcha bowl” specifically for this purpose. It will ensure that any clumps are caught and whisked away quickly. There have been attempts to make matcha in generic bowls without a flat bottom, but the result is chunkier.
If you want your almond milk to be foamy, I recommend using a milk frother. My homemade almond milk recipe is also recommended since it foams exceptionally well and tastes incredible! The high water content of store-bought brands causes them not to foam.
Nevertheless, give it a try if you have a favourite store-bought brand! The Silk brand foams quite well for me. It tastes good when heated and poured into this vegan matcha latte, even if the store-bought almond milk doesn’t foam.
- Place the matcha powder in a small bowl with a flat bottom. With the matcha whisk, gently swirl the matcha powder across the bottom of the bowl (this will prevent clumping).
- Use the matcha whisk to stir the hot water into the mixture in a W-shape until it’s smooth and foamy. If you have an electric hand whisk, you can also use it. Fill a cup with matcha.
- Be a milk frother or hand whisk to froth the almond milk, or heat it in a small saucepan. Fill your cup with warm milk and matcha. Stir maple syrup to sweeten. Take a sip.
